Carol
R. Brown has brought keen intelligence, passion, energy,
and generosity of spirit and time to her work. A leading
arts advocate, she is past chair of the Pennsylvania
Council on the Arts; past chair and past president
of the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies; member
and past chair of the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation;
member of the board of Americans for the Arts; and
past chair of the Pennsylvania Humanities Council.
As
the culmination of a distinguished career in teaching,
public service, and arts advocacy, Ms. Brown became
president of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, a private
nonprofit organization established in 1984 to assist
cultural and economic growth in downtown Pittsburgh
and the surrounding region. In that capacity, she
has achieved local, regional, national, and international
prominence as an advocate of the arts as economic
generator and a significant contributor to the quality
of life. The Pittsburgh Cultural District has received
national and international attention as a model of
arts facilities development stimulating downtown economic
renewal and destination point development. In a little
more than a decade, the trust has transformed Pittsburgh's
former red-light district into a thriving center of
restaurants, shops, and businesses, and home to five
performing arts facilities and five galleries. Plans
include additional spaces for visual and performing
arts, riverfront parks, parking, and open spaces,
and pedestrian and streetscape improvements. Ms. Brown
retired as president of the trust in 2001 to pursue
other interests.
