Raising Money in Changing Times
The 2001 United Arts Funds Preconference

July 26-27, 2001
Marriott Marquis Hotel, New York City

Schedule

Thursday, July 26

12:00-12:45 p.m. Welcome Address: The Best of Times, The Worst of Times
United Arts Fund Council Chair, Mary McCullough Hudson, Cincinnati Institute of Fine Arts, and this year's Preconference Chair, Nancy Ticktin, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts Consolidated Corporate Fund, welcome you to this year's convening. Their comments will be followed by a keynote presentation on the principal opportunities and difficulties being faced by united arts funds in our rapidly changing times.

12:45-1:30 p.m. Networking Lunch

1:45-3:15 p.m. The Changing Economic Times
As our financial climate continues to change, explore strategies for success. Look at topics such as making do with less; creating revenue producing activities; finding alternative income sources; saving through collaborations; making quantum leaps in campaign dollars; and resolving increased competition for corporate and individual support within UAF funded organizations.

3:15-3:30 p.m. Break

3:30-5:00 p.m. The Changing World of Technology
Our strategies for using technology in philanthropy need to be as agile as the dot.coms themselves. Examine the pros and cons of online giving strategies, using dot.coms as philanthropic intermediaries and using operating technology to cut costs and expand reach. How can technology be used as a tool for year-round communication and relationship building with donors and funded agencies?

6:30-8:00 p.m. Cocktail reception hosted by The Lincoln Center Consolidated Corporate Fund

Friday, July 27

8:30-10:00 a.m. Continental Breakfast by Over/Under $Million Roundtables

10:00-11:30 a.m. The Changing Corporation-Joint Session with the Arts & Business Council, Inc.
Long-term corporate leadership is a thing of the past. There is intense competition for the interest and time of corporate leaders, and then frustration as they move onto their next position. Get a better understanding of the impact of mergers and acquisitions and corporate social investing, and share success stories of cultivating and educating new donors for united arts fundraising.

11:45 a.m.-1:15 p.m. The Changing Tax Climate-Joint Session with the Arts & Business Council, Inc.
During this session we'll look at possible changes in our tax codes that could have a direct impact on giving to the arts. Are these potential tax cuts a boon because they free up discretionary funds or a problem because they weaken the tax incentive for giving? What are the implications of the potential repeal of the estate tax and is it a body blow to planned giving? Explore these and other tax-related questions.

1:30-3:00 p.m. Networking Lunch

3:00-4:30 p.m. The Future of United Arts Funds
After hearing about the trends and impact of corporate and tax changes, consider what the future holds for united arts fundraising and UAF professionals. A look at how the field has changed, what it is today, and where it is heading.

4:30-5:00 p.m. Wrap Up: What Have We Learned?
