Preconference Information now Updated!
Public art is an ideal vehicle for expressing unique community identity, activating dialogue, and engaging diverse groups in shaping civic space. Using Washington, DC, as a launching point for study and discussion, more than 290 registrants of the public art conference explored three focus areas:
- Cultural identity and the redefinition of civic space, as well as the use of public art as a tool for the development of both
- Memorials and the federal government: their role and contribution to the history and evolution of the nation’s public art
- New technologies: their influence on public art and their effect on the interpretation/mediation of public space
These topics were examined through both a national and local lens with key speakers, dialogues, panels, case studies, and tours. Also featured were the Year In Review, a survey of the year's most innovative and exciting public art projects; the presentation of the Public Art Network Award; and evening receptions at the City Museum of Washington, DC, and the Art Museum of the Americas at the Organization of American States.
